The project I am most excited about at the moment is making some props for my daughter's ballet redital. The story takes place in an art museum. I am making a stylized Degas-type thirteen year old dancer and a Greco Roman bust. Great fun!! These are the works in progress. Hope to get them done this week. Will post more when they are finished.

Weekend Blast in Saratoga Springs at Earth Angel Event

Had a wonderful weekend of inspiration and fun wih friends in Saratoga Springs. It was great to see Jen O'Connor's Earth Angel's event in person with so many terrific arists and beautiful things. A special treat was seeing Jo Packham and listening to her inspiring speech at breakfast on Sunday. Just wish I had taken more pictures!!!

I'm going to the Artist Doll & Teddy Bear Convention organized by the Susan and Terry Quinlan of the Quinlan Museum. The show is going to be in Philadelphia on May 12-14 (Thursday -Saturday).

I'm excited to see that artist will show their work. I applaud the Quinlans for keeping the show affordable.

Quinlan Museum Unveiling Nine Nancy Wiley Art Creations to Permanent Collection

The Susan Quinlan Doll Museum will introduce for the first time nine of Nancy Wiley's pieces that are now part of their permanent collection. They are all illustrations Nancy created for the book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, which are all three dimensional stage-like settings. Nancy will be there to sign books and visit on Sunday March 6th from 1 - 3. Book purchasers and their families will have free admission to the museum for the afternoon.

Also, Nancy will be signing books at the Santa Barbara Doll Club Show at Earl Warren Showgrounds on Saturday, March 5th from 10 - 3.

The Lower Mill's Rabbit Room restaurant had an Alice themed brunch to coincide with my Alice Show upstairs. Talulah's hosted the Alice show which featured my dolls. Many of my paintings are hanging in the Rabbit Room.

Introducing a new LE Ballerina with a fan

This ballerina is done in an impressionistic style with a bright palette of colors. I revisited my ballet theme which I love and have done in the past. With this piece, I captured the romance and grace of the art with her confidence and poise. I hope you will love it.

She is mostly sculpted except for her skirt. She is free standing (no base needed). The ballerina comes with or without the case. I like the stage because it provides an environment for her. The stage measures 10 inches wide an and 14 inches tall and is perfectly painted to enhance the artwork. The ballerina is 12 inches tall is of cast resin and artist acrylics. Local artist Nancy Wiley depicts Alice in Wonderland in this exhibit piece.

This summer, Strong National Museum of Play is adding some playful art to the mix.

The “Whimsical Art Trail” is on display through Oct. 24 and celebrates the fanciful creations of three local artists with national reputations: Dianne Dengel, Nancy Wiley and Craig Wilson.

Eclectic clusters of their sculptural and art-doll works will be displayed throughout the museum to create the trail of whimsy.

For Dengel, who lives in her childhood home in Rochester, it’s another stop along her interesting creative path.

The self-taught painter and doll maker once appeared on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, finger-painting Fred Rogers’ portrait.

She also painted a portrait of a young Oprah Winfrey, which Winfrey accepted as a 50th birthday present.

Dengel recalls meeting Margaret Woodbury Strong, whose collection launched the Strong Museum, at a Rochester art show in the 1960s.

Dengel’s style was still evolving, so “it was very primitive,” she says. Yet Strong purchased two of her art dolls, sending a limousine to Dengel’s studio to pick them up.

Wiley, of Canandaigua, remembers visiting the “legendary” museum as a child with her mother, an avid doll collector.

Wiley’s art-doll installations have sold for as much as $10,000 to private collectors (including celebrities such as Demi Moore and Anne Rice) and have been exhibited in galleries and museums across the country.

One of Wiley’s latest projects is a series of Alice in Wonderland art dolls; these are exhibit pieces, not the kind of dolls children play with.

Wilson, a Rochester native, is an Exhibits 3-D designer for Strong Museum as well as a distinguished wildlife sculptor working in steel.

“Craig has created top-notch, unique and playful art for the museum for years and has a prolific artistic career,” says Corrie Kraai, public programs coordinator.

Wilson’s sculptures have been exhibited in many places, including the Natural History Museum in Beijing.

Mad Hatter - Companion Doll for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

Here it is! The Mad Hatter. He joins the rest of my dolls from my illustrated Alice book.

Alice meets this unforgettable character at the famous teaparty. His trademark top hat is actually a upside down teapot. This cast resin figure is entirely hand painted in artist acrylics except for his wispy mohair.

Take a downtown stroll into arts immersion Friday - Canandaigua, NY - MPNnow

Fourteen galleries, studios, boutiques and other businesses will offer live art demonstrations, refreshments, gifts for the holidays and music, including a live community-caroling event, on Friday afternoon and evening, Dec. 4.

Arts Canandaigua began the Holiday Art Walk, scheduled for 2-8 p.m. Friday, to feature and spotlight artists and craftspeople in Canandaigua.

“An incredible amount of talent is featured in this year’s Holiday Art Walk,” Aimee Ward from Arts Canandaigua — also owner of Finger Lakes Gallery and Frame — stated in a prepared release. “We also have artists from the Rochester area and the Finger Lakes region.”

Connie Fredericks Malone will lead a community caroling event to close out the Art Walk at 8 p.m.

Among special events:

• Acrylic painter Renee Combs and landscape photographer Maria Johnson will appear at Artiques Heirlooms and Art, 37 S. Main St.

• Artist Nicole Yacano from TRU jewelry will be present at Joolz, 237 S. Main St., where there also will be a trunk show.

• Nancy Wiley Studio, at 206 S. Main St., will host a book-signing of Wiley’s illustrated edition of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.”

• Celtic musicians Barbara Jablonski and Kathleen Cappon will play Christmas music favorites on hammered dulcimer, guitar, harp and button accordions from 4 to 6 p.m. at Pat Rini Rohrer Gallery, 71 S. Main St.

• Wick-edly Sent Soap and Scented Candles Company, at 94 S. Main St., will feature artist Karen Miller, jeweler Andrea Taft and pianist Bryan Babcock.

• Donna Bennett will do a book-signing for the newly released “The Ice Cream Pirates” 4-6 p.m. at Unique Toy Shop, 120 S. Main St. The interactive pirate book is a sequel to last year's “Petey and the Mean Pirates.”

After a life on the move, Nancy Wiley settles in for her latest whimsical creation.

When Nancy Wiley and family relocated to Canandaigua in 2007, she was on an impromptu sabbatical from making art. After her second child was born, Wiley had taken a break. A health issue extended it. Packing to move to Canandaigua prolonged it and, before she knew it, two years had whizzed by.

So Wiley’s new neighbors didn’t realize that, in certain circles, she was a Big Name. Wiley is considered one of the country’s premiere doll artists—a term that usually conjures wrong impressions. These are art dolls, not toy dolls, for display not play. Her work is exhibited in museums and galleries and is sold privately to collectors.

Wiley’s dolls are inspired by fairy tales, mythology and fine arts and are painstakingly rendered and painted. Some are fashioned from paper, clay or porcelain; others are made from wire frame and padding with sculpted limbs. Costumes, hair, hats and accessories must be carefully glued in place. A lot of steps, layers and time go into creating a single doll. Wiley creates a full range: Her dolls sell from $30 to upwards of $10,000, and her fans include Hollywood stars such as Demi Moore, who even arranged for Wiley to dress her as one of her dolls for a magazine cover shoot.

Doll maker Nancy Wiley uses her talents to illustrate 'Wonderland'

Nancy Wiley has spent her life in what most children would consider the best of all possible worlds.

While she was growing up, Wiley's mother owned and ran a toy store in Vienna, Va. Her brother, William, eight years older than Nancy, was a doll maker who sold his creations in the shop.

"He was always making things, and I always found it fascinating and a huge influence," Wiley said. She ended up apprenticing with him and had a 20-year career making dolls, which she sold at toy shows across the country.

For her latest venture, Wiley spent a year and a half inside another world children adore -- Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." Her new edition of the classic is illustrated with photographs of the three-dimensional scenes Wiley created in her Canandaigua studio.

Wiley will sign copies of the book at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hudson Opera House, 327 Warren St. in Hudson, and at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Tea Shop of Woodstock, 7 Maple Lane in Woodstock.

Last week, doll maker Nancy Wiley hosted a book launch and signing at her studio on Main Street in Canandaigua to benefit Wood Library. Wiley recently illustrated a new edition of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.”

The Messenger Post did wrote about the 10 new shops that have sprouted up in the business district — nine with frontage on Main Street. Almost all of those businesses are owned by women including mine.

The city has an artistic flair. There are several other storefronts for rent. Anyone interested?

Making of a "Photo-Illustration

A new slide show. It shows the making of a photo-illustration for "Alice's Adventures In Wonderland". The process involves deciding what scene create. Then a sketch is drawn up to work out the details. Dolls and props are created and the background is painted on to canvas. Once set up, photos are taken.

In this scene, I am shooting a photo of Alice, her sister and the White Rabbit who catches Alice's attention.

Full speed ahead. The book proof came from the printer and its fantastic. The layout and pics look great. The book itself is a hard covered book with dust jacket and a vintage look. This coffee table sized book is loaded with photo-illustrations of scenes that I created with dolls and props. Every 2 page spread is richly illustrated. Lewis Carroll's full text and original hand lettering enhances the vintage feel of the book and honors his work. The new studio space is almost ready. But....since I am still finishing the Alice book, I am going to have to move in the next few weeks, not May 1. Luckily I have an understanding landlord.

It has been great working with Chris Chomick--and because of her help I think I can still finish the project in time to go to printers. But, needless to say, suddenly moving in the middle of the last push would be a disaster.

I'm looking forward to June, when the book will be finished, I will have moved in to my new space and my studio open for the Canandaigua Arts Walk!

I'm excited to tell you that we hire Chris Chomick to do the layout of "Alices Adventures in Wonderland". She just finished the difinitive NIADA book, NIADA Art Dolls Rich Traditions, New Ideas.

NIADA Conference

I have been so busy working on my book, that I have not focused enough on the upcoming NIADA Conference in September. I have heard, from good sources, that rooms at Arrowmont are filling up.

The conference promises to be a one-of-a-kind event for people interested in dolls and three-dimensional work because it focuses on the creative process. It is like an artists retreat--a great opportunity to learn from some of the best artists I know-- I wish I could take all the classes myself. I will be teaching a half-day class on painting a doll, which I am very excited about.

Arrowmont is a well-known and very respected craft school, perfectly situated in the beautiful mountains of Tennessee. In this serene environment, NIADA artists will teach their skills and sharing their knowledge over the course of a week. There will be time and space for casual conversations with the artists as well.

I encourage anyone interested in this kind of work to go the NIADA Conference website page and get the details and book your conference. There is a limit of 200 participants.

And of course, I debut my Alice in Wonderland book, along with an exhibit of the original pieces from the illustrations!!

Rabbit Chase

Here is the latest image I completed for my upcoming book.

Compositionally, this illustration is based on an early Monet painting that I always loved. The girl in the foreground is Alice's sister who reads stories to Alice. Alice soon becomes bored and when the White Rabbit shows up, the chase is on.

This illustration has two dolls (Alice and her sister) . The rabbit is painted into the background in this scene. Later in the story he is three-dimensional. I thought it was interesting for this scene because Alice is about to go into another world--another dimension, like stepping into a painting.

New Studio Space

In late spring, I will move my studio from the second floor to the ground floor in my building. My landlord is very kind and is giving me a sweatheart deal.

This means I will have twice the space and a large storefront on Main St.

I look forward to showing my work in the windows and having a storefront again.

I will be open mostly by appointment or by chance, or when there are special events in town.

Other topics include puppets, art and of course, doll art books.

I actually own some of these books and would like to own others. As an artist, I love books for inspiration and reference.

More finds from the past

Spring has arrived, at least for today. My husband opened some boxes tucked away and discovered Andre and Chloe. I did these in a very painterly manner - much like a portrait painting. These childeren are romanticized Renaissance characters from long ago. The busts are cast resin and painted with artist oil paints. Her hair is twine and her collar is a fine lace with a ribbon. His jaunty chapeau is painted fabric and he has a ruffled lace collar. The rest of thier outfits are painted on. The bust and base are a single cast. The base is painted in a burnished gold for an antique look. Felt was applied to the bottom to protect the display's surface.

Both pieces are number 9 of 40 piece edition. It is signed and numbered on the back. They are 11 inches tall. These are available at my ETSY store.

Please note that although the edition is 40, there are only several more pieces of both available as the molds were destroyed.

Moulin Rouge 2003 work for sale

I just listed "Moulin Rouge" on Etsy. This piece was recently found boxed up from our move to Canandaigua. It was in an unmarked box and what a find.

This piece explores my fascination with dance, movement, light and the excitement of the famed Paris' Moulin Rouge.

The doll is Can-Can dancer doing the famous dance. The dancer's skirt is inspired by Toulouse-Luatrec's work he did of the Moulin Rouge and he is painted on the dress playfuly pulling up her dress.

I just created an Etsy account: Etsy Store to make my work more availble on-line. Etsy is an nice site set up for artist to sell their artwork directly to the online collector. Its similar to ebay, but without the bidding. Payment for purchases is made directly to the artists and works on the honor system and feedback.

The depth of work on this site is amazing. You can find paintings to jewelry to wearable art. My friend Ruth Shively recommended this to me and she has some paintings for sale. She mainly paints portraits and has a very distinct style. You can check out her site too.

For my first foray into Etsy, I listed an open edition bust of a jester. In the next several days, I will post some more art for sale. As an artist, most of you know my dolls, but I hope that I will attract collectors of my paintings. I like to do portraits mostly, but I also enjoy painting portraits and still lifes.

Advice From a Wine Bottle

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams"--these words by Henry David Thoreau jumped out at me from a bottle of red wine on the top shelf in a local wine store. This quote was something I used to have written down in my studio, but over the years and several moves, it had disappeared. I was so surprised to see the quote on a wine bottle--needless to say I had to try it (a bit sweeter than I'm used to, but it was delicious).

The entire quote is much better--"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you have imagined. As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler."

For me, this quote sums up everything I need to remember. The journey is always riddled with distractions, confusion, self-doubt. I try to remember just to keep moving -in the basic, general direction, however vague it may appear at times.

My hope is that this blog will be a vehicle for going forward in the general direction of my dreams as an artist along with others who are interested in the same.
